The year-long celebrations of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary are slowly approaching the middle of the year. Initiatives and events supported by the City of Vancouver’s 125th Anniversary Grants Program with the participation of the Government of Canada are already part of the everyday routine of all Vancouverites. This 2011 party is not only the opportunity for citizens of Vancouver to have some fun, but also a chance for artistic and cultural organizations to promote their work, and to work closely with local communities. Here are some events that might interest you and your family in June!

Vancouver Fire & Rescue 1886-2011, Celebrating 125 years of serving our citizens with pride!

Commemoration of the 1886 Great Fire and the 125th anniversary of the fire department will take place in Gastow, on June 12, 2011. From 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., you can join the parade of fire trucks — even the oldest piece, an 1889 horse-drawn steam engine, will join the event! After opening ceremonies with Mayor Gregor Robertson at midday, you’re welcome to visit the fire department and experience a day in the life of a fire fighter.

Love Letters to Vancouver

On June 15, in Kensington Branch, and on June 25 in River District Centre, 8683 Kerr Street, and online on the official site and YouTube channel, you’ll have an opportunity to see the Vancouver Asian Film Festival’s (VAFF) celebratory worldwide video/photo contest and screening/exhibition of commissioned work on behalf of the 125th anniversary of Vancouver. VAFF has been the premier Asian Canadian film festival for 15 years, promoting multiculturalism and cross-cultural diversity here in Vancouver via film, photography, painting, and literature. A series of screenings will be followed by discussions on current development of cinematography in the Greater Vancouver area.

On June 15-16, CBC Studio 700, on 700 Hamilton Street, will host Beat Nations Live just before their appearance in Paris at the Futur-en-Seine festival of digital life and creativity. Beat Nations Live, featuring hip hop chanteuse Kinnie Starr, video mash-up artist Jackson 2Bears, performance artist, singer and co-curator Skeena Reece, MC and rapper Ostwelve, boss loopmeister and electronic cellist Cris Derksen, the Tangible Interaction Digital Graffiti Wall, storyteller and creator of the digitally triggered video drum, Archer Pechawis, and Haida artist Corey Bulpitt create a new wave in a digital live music experience.

Cultural Celebration with Musqueam First Nation

The Musqueam Nation will host multiple events, including National Aboriginal Day festivities on June 21, and the first Canadian Citizenship Ceremony to be held on a First Nation reserve on June 25. This celebration of Musqueam culture, art, and heritage will also feature Cultural Dialogues with Musqueam Partners on June 23. It will focus on discussing the question of creating a sustainable relationship between the Musqueam community and neighbouring communities.
