Top 5 Antique Stores in Vancouver: #4 Stepback

Posted by

Many of us are tired of our current culture of mass produced, throw-away items and cheap materials. Compared to them, vintage goods can be passed down for generations and also easily combined with more contemporary pieces to create your own comfortable and nostalgic look. After the previously featured Salmagundi West and Antiques, ReFind and Baker's Dozen Antiques, our next store is based exactly on the idea of presenting old stuff in a modern way, giving people tips and tricks of how to re-purpose things!

Located on Broadway and Bayswater, Stepback is another antique store known for its eclectic collection of rare and one-of-a-kind items. Started nine years ago by couple Chris Switzer and Robin Muxlow, Stepback is a collection of vintage furniture, upcycled stationery, and other objects rescued from schools, hotels, and even — it looks like — medical rooms. A recent posting on the store's Facebook page features a vintage hospital bedside table with stainless steel top.

A great store for the artistically inclined, Stepback carries a variety of vintage typewriters, postcards, journals, and cameras. Known for having a high turnover, it's a store worth revisiting.

3 We love old school stuff ChrisThe antique store is not focusing on a particular theme

Rather than focusing on any particular theme or era, the curators at Stepback have created a hodge-podge of interesting and unrelated items. But one theme does seem to jump out.

We love old-school stuff, Chris tells me. Old globes, maps, chalkboards, desks. We like to take old stuff and present it in a modern way, to give people an idea of how to re-purpose things.

I ask Chris if they find much of their stuff themselves, and I was blown away to learn that they find 90 per cent of their pieces themselves or with the help of their family.

It's mostly from the Fraser Valley. Flea markets, garage sales. It's something we've done for a long time,

he says.

As mentioned above, Stepback is a great place if you love oldschool classroom items. Just to be sure, you’re not in a thrift store so don’t expect the shop to be extremely cheap (but the prices are actually still fair). On the other hand, everything here is chosen with love and is properly polished and cleaned. You are really buying the best quality! ;)
