Travelling east of Vancouver you’ll arrive at Burnaby, another great recreation area for visitors and locals alike. A large, mostly residential area east of the city, Burnaby has extensive parks and sports centres filled with activities year-round.
Running/Jogging
Runners congregate at Central Park for a track run, but if you need more aggressive physical activity swing over to Swanguard Stadium nearby for interval workouts with some of the city’s best trained athletes. Right next door you can have a go at the fitness circuit which features a wide variety of exercise options.
Ice Skating
The newly expanded Canlan Ice Sports Arena holds eight rinks and is far more than just an skating arena. Equipped with the latest satellite technology, two big-screen TVs and fourteen 27-inch televisions, you will never miss your favourite match in between skating on the ice. That's the combination that works for me - the kids are on the ice and I'm sipping hot chocolate watching whatever sporting event is on the tube, occasionally waving to them through the glass. The Canlan Indoor Soccer Centre features a state of the art, indoor soccer training facility built on a revolutionary turf playing surface, and is also home to the fastest growing indoor soccer league in Canada. Public use of the facility is available but limited. You'll find all you need at the Canlan Ice Sports Web page.
Swimming, Exercise and Other Sports
The Burnaby Lake Regional Nature Park complex located on Kensington Avenue offers a healthy array of activities. Enjoy the C.G. Brown pool, sauna, whirlpool, weight room, tot pool and water slide. The Burnaby Lake Arena offers ice skating and activity rooms. Archery fields, tennis courts, numerous sports fields and a sports pavilion are also available. The city's newest arena, the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, has a wide range of activities, from sporting events to trade shows. Across from the Copeland Centre, west of Kensington Avenue are three new ultra-soft, all-season artificial surface playing fields that are lit for 24-hour use. The fields are used for soccer, grass hockey, football, ultimate and field lacrosse. The fields are served by a new field house, snack bar and meeting rooms overlooking the fields. At the Bonsor Recreation Complex visitors can enjoy a 37-metre pool, whirlpool, sauna and kids' leisure pool.
